From the Mind of a Therapist: Exploration of a Case Study
“Rebecca presented for services after experiencing exhaustion and being overwhelmed from the day to day responsibilities of work and family life. She explained that her job required her to work 50-60 hours per week and she had one off day per week. Instead of spending her off day relaxing or taking care of personal needs, she often found herself trying to catch up on work tasks or caring for her daughter. Her daughter’s father was very present in her life as the two were dating seriously and had discussed marriage as a future option. Rebecca’s boyfriend wanted to take care of his family financially and assist her more with caring for their daughter but she would not allow him to do so due to lack of trust that he could do it. Rebecca explained that she was physically tired and unclear of what to do. As her therapist, I first engaged her in identifying her priorities. She listed her family, son, and work however neglected to list herself as one of her priorities. Further into therapy, she explained that she her mother and father had divorced years ago and her father was due to remarry a woman 15 years younger than him. Rebecca explained that her mother was very independent and rarely expressed need and affection towards her father. As the therapist, I engaged her in identifying the similarities of her mother’s habits to her own and pointed out the need for her partner to feel needed. She was assigned the tasks of doing something special for herself daily even if it was taking a soothing bath, taking a leave of absence and allowing her boyfriend to care for her and her daughter as he desired. I pointed out that although it is admirable that she was independent , she was bound to repeat the actions of her mother. A primal feeling of a man is to feel needed.”
Rebecca’s Testimony: “As a 30 year old single mom with a demanding job (50+ hrs/wk), I came to Fanike with a broken spirit. My stress had begun to materialize physically through hair loss, loss of appetite, food cravings and skin issues. I hadn’t been happy in a long time and had no idea how to get back to a better place. After spending some time with Fanike, I was able to truly identify what’s important to me and refocus my energy and efforts accordingly. I improved my diet, took more time out the day for my family and I and made my health a priority. I have found a renewed sense of self worth and am a better mom, girlfriend, daughter, and friend.”
